On May 21, 2014, Morris Canal Community Development Corporation (MCCDC) held its fourth annual Dinner and Auction Gala Fundraiser. The goal of this event was to acknowledge members of our community that actively participate and express support for their community and the Morris Canal Redevelopment initiatives.
Councilwoman Diane Coleman is the Ward F Council Woman and lifelong resident of Jersey City. She is the President and Founder of Building an Empire, Inc., a not-for-profit organization that provides social services programs which has helped over 8,200 residents of Jersey City. Building an Empire received the prestigious 2012 Outstanding Organization Award from the New Jersey Federation of Colored Women’s Club. Diane is a member of the NAACP and has served on their Financial Committee; she is a Board Member of the Kennedy School of Dance, an Executive Board Member of the North Jersey Chapter of the National Action Network, and a volunteer member of the Community Awareness Series.
Earl Morgan, an award-winning journalist who spent 31 years as a Jersey Journal reporter that covered Jersey City and Hudson County for the Jersey Journal for decades, before retiring in 2009. He’s reported on and watched the changing demographics of Jersey City, also lived through the historic state takeover of the Jersey City Public Schools, and was sent to Washington to witness the historic inauguration of Barack Obama as the first African-American President of the United States. Earl Morgan provided a unique perspective on life in Jersey City for African-Americans and all residents; he continues to write his weekly column, “Morgan’s Corner” published each Wednesday in the Jersey Journal, Jersey City’s primary newspaper.
John Gomez is an architectural historian, the founder of the non-profit Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy and the architecture and preservation columnist for the Jersey Journal, where he has published over 150 major articles. In 2012 he established the Historic Preservation Network, an online portal for architectural and preservation history, theory, discovery, discussion and discourse. Mr. Gomez is the author of “Legendary Locals of Jersey City” and the forthcoming “Preservation Dreams”.
Maria Cruz serves as Branch Manager at the Liberty Savings Federal Credit Union. Maria is a beloved community asset, as she financially educates assists and enriches people’s lives. Maria’s innovative ideas, one-on-one interviews, seminars and counseling has helped many of her members and friends find financial resolutions to regain, resolve and rebuild their credit as it applies to their lives, thus enhancing their quality of life.
